What is Second Career?

Second Career provides laid-off workers with

  • skills training to help them find jobs in high-demand occupations in Ontario
  • financial support

Second Career is a cost-sharing grant provided on the basis of need, so you may be asked to contribute what you can to your training or education.

Second Career provides up to $28,000 for

  • tuition
  • books
  • other instruction costs such as manuals or workbooks
  • transportation
  • a basic living allowance

Additional support may be available to accommodate the needs of people with disabilities, dependent care, costs of living away from home and academic upgrading.

Occupations at a skill level B or C with good employment prospects for 2009 to 2013 will be considered.

If you are interested in training in a high-demand occupation contact Gezhtoojig Employment & Training to learn more and start on your path to Second Career.

Ontario Self-Employment Benefit

The Ontario Self-Employment Benefit provides unemployed people who are or have recently been eligible for Employment Insurance with income and entrepreneurial support while they develop and start their business.

Who can apply?

Job seekers who are unemployed can apply to participate if they meet one of the following conditions:

They established a claim for Employment Insurance benefits or their Employment Insurance benefit period ended within the past three years. They established a claim for Employment Insurance maternity or paternity benefits and were paid benefits within the past five years, and are re-entering the labour force after having left it to care for newborn or newly adopted children.

For the purpose of determining whether an individual qualifies as a participant, the date the completed application is received by Employment Ontario is the date when he or she is considered to have requested assistance.

Contact 705-524-6772 or toll free at 1-800-361-9256 for more details and dates for the next Information Session.
