April McQuabbie
Program Support Clerk/Receptionist
April McQuabbie resides in her home community of Henvey Inlet First Nation in Pickerel, ON. She obtained her Ontario Secondary School Diploma from Parry Sound High School in 2007. April had held various employment opportunities during the summers and after her high school and wanted to pursue post-secondary education. She wanted to make sure that when she was ready for further education that it would be best suited to her and she choose the health care field. She then enrolled in the Medical Office Administrator program at CTS-Canadian Career College and in 2009 she obtained her diploma.
April is currently employed with Henvey Inlet First Nation Health Centre. Her current title is Program Support Clerk/Receptionist. In this position she enjoys working with people and meeting new people. Some of her duties include: Quarterly Health Reports, clerical duties such as; answering phone lines and redirecting calls, of course with polite mannerism, creating a monthly community newsletter, utilizing Microsoft office for everyday tasks such as creating memos, letters and correspondence, arranging appointments, surgeries and scheduling proper transportation arrangements and most importantly showing courteous social skills.
In March 2009, Gezhtoojig provided funding for April for a Purchase of Training for the Medical Office Administrator program. The Purchase of Training program assists individuals to overcome existing labour market barriers by arranging a variety of training courses with qualified trainers. The individual may qualify for tuition, books, living allowance, dependent care and transportation for programs that are up to 52 weeks/one year in length.
If you are looking at getting into this field then April recommends being a positive social person as with any field of work. She states that "you can be anything you want to be with a vision, hope and help".
